IA04: Practice Professional Networking

Image
Internship Mixer Link to registration for event:   https://my.chatham.edu/happenings/get_event.cfm?m1=10&y1=2018&d1=25&EventID=22534          I attended the internship mixer on October 25 th at 4:30pm. It was held in the Mellon Board room where many companies and organizations stood at different tables all around the room. I walked around first to get the layout of the area and then I picked up the sheet that had exactly who came that day, what their company is about, and what kind of interns they are looking for. I circled a good handful of companies I was interested in and then I went around to find them and talk to them to find out more information about their company. The companies I was most interested in included, Caboodle, Moxie Events and Power Bomb Productions LLC, My Brothers Keeper, and Girls Write Pittsburgh. Most of these companies dealt with communications, marketing, public relations, and working on social media pages which I...

Individual Assignment 03: Create A Personal Business Plan

Business Plan  Mission Statement: By ensuring equality, courage, and hard work through all aspects of life I will be a strong leader of my company. As an active listener and being creative with team members, I will pursue the best possible outcome for the company as a whole. I will strive for equality in all aspects of the work environment so that everyone will balance each other out and work well together. The wise use of my networks will also help my business grow and be successful.  Business Environment: The industry I will be competing in is the Political Science Field. Politics is something that is used and seen all around the world. Though it may be used in different ways, politics still has a great impact on so many people in society. Since this industry is utilized in many different aspects globally, depending on where in the world politics occurs, different things can change the environment people are living in. The United States is a representative democracy...

Individual Assignment 02: Find A Role Model

A Role Model I am majoring in political science and minoring in marketing and communications so I interviewed Katie McClelland who is a political science and history double major. She is minoring in pre-law and is a member of Chatham's Student Government, is an orientation leader, and plays on the softball team. Katie is also a member of a couple clubs such as the Pre-law Club and the Cold Case Club.  A couple pieces of advice Katie gave me was to write everything down, and do it multiple times if needed. Writing things down has proven to better ingrain things in your head and it helps you remember things as you move forward in life. Katie said, "Flashcards are one way to do this, and will help you remember much easier than just reading your notes", which is a useful tip for any class I take. Katie also mentioned to get all or as much homework done the weekend before because it gives me more time during the week to actually study for exams and take care of anythi...

Individual Assignment 1: Stay Current

Stay Current: Leadership The podcast 592: Why Everyone Should See Themselves as a Leader is very intuitive to leaders in the workforce and in life in general. Sue Ashford is a professor at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business and she talks about her research on leadership. Sue explains how everyone can be a leader and has leadership qualities within themselves. By expanding on the personality traits of a leader, she shows that there are not just certain people that are leaders but everyone is able to be a leader with the actions they choose. Sue explains the qualities associated with a leader such as being sensitive,  intelligent, dedicated, and dynamic. A lot of times people actually have those qualities but still do not see themselves as leaders. Many people are not comfortable with associating themselves as leaders. One big take away from this podcast is when Sue says, "The more you have a leader identity the less risk you see in leading. And the less...

Planning of IAs

Throughout the fall semester I will be completing five assignments. As I complete these assignments I will post each one as a separate post to better organize my thoughts on my blog. I will finish each one before the deadlines by working on one at a time each week until they are all edited and completed. I will try to complete my assignments the Thursday before each assignment so that I can make last minute touches and edits on Friday before the actual deadline. IA1: I will read the article or listen to the podcast that I choose first and then the weeks following I will write about it little by little until I complete it the week that it's due. If I finish earlier than the required time, then that works as well but as long as it is done by the Thursday before the due date then I know I am in the clear. IA2: I will start with picking someone inspiring to interview. Then I will come up with questions for them and set up the planning to meet them. Once I have completed the intervi...
